A day to catch up.

A great deal of things don't get done when I don't feel well - such a hindrance to calmly sitting still & sipping green tea - I have deadlines, catching up, and filling in the blanks! In the midst of pulling things together, I did have a few moments to use my last "cup sketch" to create something fresh and new in my art journal. With a few things already on the counter that seemed to speak to me -- some book paper, a paper bloom, and a used up lunch sack, I just added paint. Isn't that what you would do with those things too? (lol!)

It feels just right, it is right now...and it is me.

Every time I have a week like this, I come back to the importance of simplicity in my home (family), business, and schedules. It would be so much easier to get help, do the work, feel inspired if I was more organized. Do you go through this struggle to simplify too?

Perhaps it is just time for a bit of Spring cleaning~

It is also time to be thinking about the sheep. I can hardly stand the wait, they are coming home at the end of the month and I am giddy. Do you have spring loves you are anticipating as well?

I am sorry for being so quiet this month.

I had a wonderful trip to the desert with my DH. A perfect trip of warmth, delicious food, and sleep. Every minute was blissfully fun. We were like kids again!

And then... I came home sick. (I don't do sick well...so sad to be sick.)

However, I am finally on the mend and enjoying all of the beautiful & brilliant things I see from my winter windows. It is good to pause (right?) and for a few days -- feel the quiet peace of hibernation.

one word home

My *HOME* is working on me.

It has been a busy time here. Boys coming and going. Schedules overlapping. Deadlines to meet. But my word is unrelenting in my mind. It meets me in my morning prayers, it follows me to the kitchen, to the laundry hampers, and even as I am pushing a shopping cart at the local market.

This place.

This time.

My home...This home...His home...Our home...

Every crack, twig, bit of rust and peeling paint is mine ~ on the walls, on the doors, on my porch, and in my art. I think my HOME (one word) is making its impression on me in deeper ways...

I pray for insight and understanding. My sketches often come before the words leaving me with open questions. I wait for answers in this sweet place.

I have loved my little moleskin journals. I have instantly filled one up and am half way through this one too. The diminutive size has made it easy to put in my pockets, take in my purse, or sketch in my bed at night. Just right. Perhaps you will try some sketchy work too?

Feeding sheep.

I have been a bit out-of-the-loop this week. Spilled out. Unraveled. Not a bad thing, just a bit too much goodness...inspiration and creative work...on top of family responsibilities.
You have weeks like that too?

The best thing that I could have done today -- was exactly what I did -- I went out to feed sheep. I realize this is a deep message to myself, feeling purposefully timed for just right now, just when I needed it the most. Feeding sheep ~ always ends up feeding me. I have missed the time I have spent with these girls. They are so calming to my spirit. I always feel more myself - my feet are firmly grounded. The warm winter morning was so beautiful, too. And with the farmer, horses and dogs along, it made it a farmy adventure~

home (one word)

One word.

I tell you, I have done this now for years and it is always the same.

My *one word* chooses me, I don't understand it, I am not even sure I like it...then it takes over my life.

Am I talking to anyone?

I think the painful twist in this story is the way I always react to my *one word* -- it is rarely okay -- why do I fight it? This year my sweet word made its entrance (HOME) and I immediately felt like it was a trap. I felt as though my heart's wishes to sprout and bloom included spending more time away from my home (classes, experience, travel!). I couldn't bear the thought of being locked in! So, I agonizing over even sharing my word for hopes that it would change. Please...be something completely different?

Nope. It is...home.

In the past few days I have come to terms with my sweet word, no, more than that, I think I am falling in love. Home has moved into my life. It reminds me of the places I was born and raised. Where I moved to and moved from. Where I loved and where I was loved. Where I have grown, yes, home is always the place for new growth~

And it holds my attention as God's holy dwelling place ~ home ~ intimately in my heart.
His home is my home~

"If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him and we will come to him and make our home with him." john 14:23

I am not trapped, I am always home~

So, I have taken these early inspirations and a tiny moleskin book, a bitty-little thing that can fit in the palm of my hand, and I am going to collect *home* treasures. Whatever they may be. And for all the wrestle and spin this word will bring, I will be ready with pen in hand~

Joyously grateful for the privilege of being a daughter, a sister, a mother, and a friend. Overwhelmed by the life gifted to me~ with all the storms I have been guided through and the wonders I have seen. Looking back on just one year is a treasure of emotion!

Finding center.

This time of year leaves me a bit off kilter. How about you?

The holiday's deliciousness of colors, activities, foods have made their way to my heart (and hips!) and I am a bit tearful putting away the last sparkling things. I suppose it is just this way the older you get and the more memories you have?

The holiday-afters are unique in their bittersweet gifts, aren't they.

A new look at life as the year begins. A letting go and grabbing hold of what it is God is gifting. Are you feeling this too? Too full and still hungry? A new page, chapter, or a brand new book in life to open, but haven't yet? An anticipatory excitement for what is coming -- but deeply quiet, too?

I don't know what it is, but it seems to cover this time of transition every year.

I guess I am a bit tender-hearted this week -- overwhelmed by God's goodness, feeling that holy anticipation of newness, open-hearted to what I am experiencing. All of it brings me to my knees.

Holding last years treasures close to my heart one more time...and getting ready to turn that next page. Perhaps I just needed the extra day to find my center~

I am thinking of you my sweet friends, hoping you have found yourself centered (lol) and excited for this new year! It is going to be good~

circles of love

I think we are here for each other, too.

I hope your week has been extra sweet and that you are finding time for some quiet moments in your day. I sat last night with my notebook in my hand and within five minutes I had fallen asleep (at 6:30pm?). It's okay, I am finally learning that I need to have timeouts and re-charge more often. Creative downtime, right?

The snowmen sketches are so simple and fun. Nothing takes you back to your childhood like drawing those big sloppy circles. I love it!

Again with simple watercolors and loads of water, I just filled in color, shape, and shadow. The splatter has become a new fetish and I practice a couple of times on newspaper before clobbering my page with the mess. If you get too much paint (watercolor) it is easily to fix with a quick dab of paper towel or bit of sleeve. The real trick is in staying playful and light ~ no-stress sketching!

Sleepy sheep.

My holidays typically hint of lambs and sheep -- but this year they are center stage. I am embracing it. My boys love it -- every little heart-shaped nose and dirty woolly fleece.

My heart is caught up in God's message as the Sheepherder and the way he loves His sheep ~ Overwhelming. Unending. Never forgetting. Passionate. Wholehearted. LOVE!

I love the little birds.

I think I must have passed this on to my boys. We couldn't decide what to do for each other or our neighbors for Christmas, but we knew we wanted to purchase a huge bag of wild bird seed for our tiniest friends. The little finches, chickadees, and doves are our family friends. We also get a few loud bluebirds, too.

The simplicity of circles really plays out here. Just let your wrist draw simple circles in a variety of sizes. Look a where you may want a beak to go. I liked the idea of the little birds being fascinated by the words hanging in the air below them.

The only other trick was to use a couple of photos for some details and color. I had to study the tails and little black faces carefully before jumping in with my own impressions. I used very little color, a great deal of water, keeping the two pages as simple as possible.

I think this is a sweet sketch to try with paper collage or acrylics, too.

Today, it is Christmas card mailing day! Having lived many places in our married lives, we have the *gifts of Christmas love that comes in our mailbox* from all over the world. I love catching up with friends and family in pictures & words. I treasure the cards we receive. Our two baby lambs are gracing our cards this year (little Bea looks like she is smiling). The inside reads,

"Oh, Come let us adore Him"

Holiday colors

My youngest son asked me what colors to use for a Christmas wish list. I told him I would use every color. Christmas is a celebration of color!

Snow's brilliant white
Trees deep greens
Gold sparkles on the ice capped wheat left standing in the fields
Hot pink cheeks and shivering lips
Cobalt blue sky as the sun sets & rises
Orange glow of the fire in the woodstove
Brown mugs of delicious cocoa with those tiny marshmallows

Isn't it a deliciously exciting part of creating ~ color.

I have always been afraid of color. I would lament over my choices, harbor fears of "what if I change my mind?", and wonder if things "went together". It always stopped my from finishing projects or even starting them! Have you lived like this too?

It is time to step out from those stumbling blocks.

The holidays are a perfect time to be brave. Use your favorite coffee browns, royal purples, robin egg blue, and bright happy yellow...why not?!

Our wildly colorful God seems to love decorating his world with sparkling color~

I am in love with the look of layered watercolors on the gesso paper. It is yummy. I simply added grey and a bit of brown on top (for the silver mug) and highlighted the edges in black, letting the paint run down as I went. The brushes just ate up the color and I penned right over top when they dried.

(The poor brushes look how I feel tonight -- a bit wilty?)

Perhaps this weekend you will sketch something to paint in riotous holiday colors?

Today's sketch is one I love. I love the simple & symbolic. Initially I thought I would create a collage -- I most likely will come back to this sketch again. But, today it will be simple, pencil sketched in my current art journal, and watercolors.

Gesso makes the colors more vivid and texture rich. I am excited for the final results - layers of paint take time to dry.

I believe it is a vessel (a silver mug) -- holding my current state of creative play and my holiday notes (above). The poor brushes look a bit wild don't they? Wow, that is a great representation of my current state of mind! Lol!

Latte love.

I love the idea of sketching the sweet and silly things of life. This is one of those. This past week has been a frenetic race to finish art projects (I have been in art school all semester), support my young sons in their holiday programs, and provide some stability to a home of teens and young adults as they labor through the final assignments of the semester. It is quite a feat.

These sketches are an obvious reflection of a needed & favorite muse~

It is fun to just make some simple circles and see what comes to mind. Why not?
This morning I began the watercolors on my line of chickadees...and they are all from simple circles too! Easy peasy!!!

Our 3D art class was an absolute treasure. Six hours a week we labored in a huge workroom, many of us having to spend hours more finishing projects just to keep up with the course. A small class of art majors and non-traditional students mixed in. Today was our final critique.

A brilliant art major finishing her gorgeous lamp. I told her she could sell it on ETSY easily~

My kinetic sculpture and my final post deconstruction sculpture -- I am so thrilled that they are finished and they were well liked. I think the splinters in my fingers should count for part of the final grade!

Now that my classes are finished I am ready to jump into the holiday.

The morning here is wintry white. Fog has settled here in the valley and the light in my windows is so softly filtered. I am remembering how good it feels to be home. Kitchen warm and toasty, stocking feet, hair pulled up. Not every day is this quietly mine -- but today I have it to myself~

Thank you LORD for your loving me

and reminding me of my new heart

Sweet Kate's baby cardinal is finished and I added my little thoughts to the page. I usually know what I want to say sometime during the painting. This little one spoke to me of my grace-filled life (not easy or uncomplicated - but definitely grace filled) and how tenderly I am cared for.

We are all so loved.

A place to land.
Something to satisfy hunger.
A way to bless others.
A blessed life to live.
Sparkling grace falling down upon our heads every morning.

It's okay to sketch out our feelings, our memories, our gratitude. It grounds us to the present (which is a great gift to ourselves and others). It frees us inside when we let our art-hearts sing. Holiday sketches ~ your sweet ideas!

I spent a couple of evenings reading over your delicious ideas and then quietly sketching in my pajamas. Quickly drawing all the images that spoke to me. Simple lines, simple lines, simple lines. By now you know I am not a complicated artist -- I am always going to keep things simple.

Seriously -- who shows you the inside of her sketch book? Am I so crazy?!

(I will have a list of girls to *gift to* on Wednesday...I am still working on all of your inspirations!!!)

The ideas you shared ran one into another, like a sketchy melody, and the holiday mood took over my heart completely.

I was still happily humming to myself every night at 11pm ~

I think it is beautiful to see what comes from a simple sketch.

Can I show you my first attempt? I wanted to draw my version of a little-fuzzy-baby cardinal (thank you Kate!) I remember seeing one once that wasn't completely red yet, still fluffy with golden down.

I liked my idea enough to sketch it onto its own paper (I used 90lb. watercolor paper), it is heavy enough to handle any paint I decided to use.

I always have a mini debate about paint. Should I use acrylic? It is easy to change and layer. Should I go with watercolor? Quick decisions, brilliant color, always a surprise waiting. Should I use both? Perhaps ink would look better?

(I have decided to include all of these painting techniques/ideas/experiments in my art journal workshop this winter! So messy fun!)

But, for these holiday sketches...I chose simple watercolors.

Watercolors can be a brilliant friend. You just need to speak their language. It is so fun to quickly add layers of color, see something come to life, and they have such a lovely light feel don't they?

homes for the holidays

Homes.

As I shared this past week, here, and in Christy's Ornaments class -- I am quite taken with houses and homes this year. I have decided that the best way to work on my little homespun project is to do it right here, with you, in my sunny warm kitchen, with our messy pencils & paints.

I don't expect you to sketch and paint houses like me, but I do hope you will sketch with me~

Can I share with you my simple process for deciding what to work on?
Perhaps it will help you?

My creative process is just this simple: My fingers see what my heart is saying. It looks funny in writing, but sounds so true to my inner artist! I see and desire to sketch -- something. I use a simple pencil and make thumbnail sketches on notebook paper. Over time they begin to form shapes. I get (overly) excited about seeing it in color and texture, and I make a huge mess turning the simple sketches into -- art.

Then, just as I step out in this creative process...the ideas/the concepts begin to make more sense (it always does). And soon, the simple sketches...become beautifully prophetic in my life~

They tell a bigger story.

So...this project started with a simple sketch I formed in my daily notes.

It instantly resonated with me and with the holidays, a perfect combination.

I decided to expand it to local homes that I see everyday & love for their adorableness. Simple shapes, lines, and details. I took photos one cold morning and printed them small -- just to remember the details & scale of things. The rest is left to my wild imagination. Oh, yes, I have a wild imagination~

I could have chosen homes from my childhood, my family homes, my bird houses...you get the idea? It has so many possibilities~

Look at him -- already cute and waiting for color.

I have a few more (a dozen more) girls getting ready for their winter wear. These bitty ornaments have been a gift to create. Simple. Quick. Colorful. Easy to love and share~

the artist projects have been so different and fun~

These past few weeks have been a whirl~

(it is time for a ponytail in my hair and some sweatpants today!)

I don't know if you knew this about me, but I tend to do too much (I really like living my life in overly abundant ways). I am sure it stems from an artist's heart ~ riding the waves of inspiration and creation until I can't move. Then it is time to sit still, rest, catch my breath.

Breathe in. Breathe out.

The classes I signed up for this past fall are just ending. Finals are this week and next ~ this means I have spent hours in a workshop creating all kinds of messes. Yes, and I will be spending hours more~

I feel a bit like a Christmas elf...

My sweet classmate Robert working on his kinetic sculpture of geese. Each is unique and in the end they should independently move their heads ~ he always pulls his projects together in great style. I can't wait to see the final result. He was a dentist for years and then fell in love with art~ he is gifted.

Here are my piles of messy rust, barn wood, and tools. I am in process~ meaning I spend a great deal of time staring and sketching, both are very important to the creative process~ (chocolate also helps right now, too!)

My two final projects are: sculptures of rudimentary artist tools in a barn wood box and a kinetic sculpture made from a barn post and metal findings from my little stone house. Oh my~

Our huge and inspiring workshop is filled with beautiful creations in every form. It is nursery for birthing new ideas. Sun filled windows, artists all busy at work, tools of every kind, and sawdust misting every surface.

I have loved this learning experience -- the art major students are a great encouragement to me, and the projects were so "bravery inducing". I have never handled so many power tools and had such deadlines to meet!

If you have the opportunity to take classes from local artisans or local College Art Departments it can be a life changing experience. I am a newly skilled & very brave artist because of it~

Perhaps it will go on your list of things to try next year?

Ideas come from the strangest places.

Have you had a moment when inspiration strikes...from a friends words, a random quote, a song, a memory, or a smell? Or perhaps it is a silly idea when you are stretching in the morning? It seems like the lead up to the winter holidays does that to me. Christmas brings so many brilliant sparkling ideas that it is hard to write them all down. Not all of them artistic...many of the food related (sugar cookie recipes? lol).

It is hard to keep them all in my head. A *list of good ideas* is needed ~ and images are even better!

Images hold so many words and feelings don't they? In photography we know them as captures. It makes sense too, doesn't it? A moment is caught with all the ideas/colors/feeling and narratives it holds.

What is inspiring you? Are you doing something new for the holidays or are you embracing the things you have always done?

Do you choose colors to decorate with each year or are you a very traditional holiday girl?

I think we are going to embrace the end of this year with a few traditional things we love. Gingerbread, sugar cookies (snowballs from my sweet friend Kristi), and a delicious menu of soups and bread (can you tell I am hungry?). We will also have a tree that likes to stay organic, I can't help it, I always decorate it with nests, birds, and hops vines. The cat just loves it.

Perhaps we will get started on some of that today (mmm...cookies) ~ how about you?

New projects and ideas are piling up!

I love how art journaling just takes what is going on inside my heart to a whole new level. I laugh as the sketches seem to playfully share with me what it is that I need to see, hear, understand. Healing and hopeful and full of mischief!

The snow arrived last night and the world is white. My favorite color ~ a blank sheet of divine white. The perfect sketchy playground!

What will we do with these wonderful months of white?

I am putting together content for a winter class to teach ~ a sketchy adventure class of art journaling (not the name of it, but the idea behind it!). I think it will be based on the simple sketching concepts we started here.

I will have to show you my ideas and see what you think!

Her days are filled with sparkle~

Could the holidays come at a better time? It just makes so much sense for the sparkle, fresh snow, and holiday music to come just when I am so sad that fall is leaving. The perfect way to re-focus and lift up my eyes to the happiness that "new" seasons bring.

I love the simple and sweet things the cold & wet bring ~ delicious warm treats and time to curl up with books, paints, and percolating holiday ideas. Have you noticed that so many great ideas come to you when you just sit still?!

I remember as a young girl being so caught up in the holiday "creating". My sweet Mum was always making something new and brilliant and we (my sister and I) would dig right into her messes. We would have weeks of making beautiful ribbon roses, ornate Christmas butterflies, large painted soldiers, and bows of ribbons galore! So fun! There was always something being made.

I guess that is why I am in full sparkle mode this week.

Doesn't it feel like it's time to get everything off the table and make something fresh and new?

I have had some Q's about my new project and class. First of all, this is quite simply (one of) the craziest things I have attempted this fall and I love it. I am not shy in front of a camera, my problem is getting all of the techie things figured out. How I wish I didn't have such steep learning curves -- I pat myself on the head every time I figure out something new (good brain!).

The class is organized into 12 different projects. I am focusing my part of the class on my new little "winter hats" decor/ornaments. I have at least 3 video segments showing every aspect of the process and I sketch, paint, decorate, and embellish 12 different ornaments all together. Plus I give you the sketches to print and all my little hints, too!

The only thing I don't do is art journal any of them. I will do that here at home -- with you!

How can this be work?

I think the last two photo shoots I have had this week were the best therapy I could have asked for. I laughed so hard and played so hard I think they all thought I was a bit crazy. I am quite sure I am~

Every time I spend time photographing people is a gift. I am entrusted to share in a vulnerable place where people cannot hide (images share truth) and for a brief moment in time, we together capture what is real. Here, now, honest, sweet, and transparent. I love every minute and find lasting friends in each encounter.

I have studied photography since my first film class in junior high school. It wasn't until I had enough money to purchase film (after bills were paid in Residency) that my addiction completely took over. Hungry to capture time and light it is an unrelenting state. I can wear myself completely out in on a drive just to the next town. Visually I study the lines, the quality of light, the changes in landscape from week to week (the fields of farms). If there are sheep close by I am completely tormented to stop and see how the grass touches their hooves and the way the light warms up their dirt strewn wool. I can't help it.

What is your next step?

Every bitty step towards a goodness-filled life is just this simple.

Today~ What is my next step?

I am happy to say that living this "next step" way ~ I have enjoyed life at full-speed the past several months. Literally finding my path ready and waiting as I stepped out of bed in the dark mornings. It has been an epic adventure. Each day has begun with a prayer-filled willingness to take on the day's challenge and to push the envelope of abundant love in my daily (creative) life...

I ask for divine abundance in my heart, my thoughts, my energy, and my relationships. I pray big prayers over you, too. Then I put on my shoes and go~

Seeing the places, experiences, growth that has occurred because of a simple choice of abundance is amazing. It isn't easier -- it is perhaps a more challenging time all the way around -- but, my life has become *more*. Does this make sense to you?

Does a heart grow larger? Arms more able to hold? Knees less tired? (oh my...Yes!)

I feel that in your notes, emails, and your blog posts too~ many of you are experiencing a *more-real* life as well. Do you see this, too?

For me, it has been a time of pushing up my sleeves and being actively engaged. Fear has met its match this fall ~ I haven't flinched. Have you been brave too? It is a brilliant thing to create without fear, it is new to me, and I feel blessed by it's absence.

And the growth I have seen in this sisterhood of online friends has been amazing. I am praying for your next steps and I feel your abundance of hopes for mine as well. How can we be so blessed (!!!) to have each other on this dusty, messy, (and oh-so-sparkling) path?

I don't believe we travel alone on these journeys~

Today is a good day to plan out my next steps for this season. How about you?

a new book

A blessed book + gesso = love.

I have been back in the paint this morning. Among the many things I should be doing this weekend, I threw all my paints out on the kitchen counter and made a huge mess ~ and had a huge beaming smile on my face.

Oh, paint. I love paint.

I know there are other forms of seeking nirvana, meditation, contemplation, prayer...but some days it just takes a bit of play in wet color to make my heart happy and quiet my thoughts. I talk to myself, too. (It is better if no one else is home and the music is on, too.)

Now for all of you who love Beth Moore, I understand if you just lost your breath. "My heavens girl, look at what you just did to that book!" I know! I love it!

Of all the books/authors I could have chosen, picking one of her books just made me happy -- and I think she would love it. I have read and re-read this book and decided that as part of my therapy I would use it as my canvas. Why not? My sweet art journal will be blessed & infused in a huge outpouring of Jesus love. Amen.

If you are not comfortable using an existing book for your art journaling -- just choose a notebook or one of the many art journals you can find in your local shop. (I think I promised to do a post on this didn't I?)

I wanted this book to start with where I am right now. It is going to be a book of wide-open-discovery of God's influence in my daily life. I have sat awake at night with ideas for sketches...this is where my creative heart is living right now...

I don't know what tomorrow's art will be -- I only know to expect something...

I am also very excited about Christy's class starting this week, her influence on the art journaling movement is so fun and playful. If you haven't joined in, why not?

Any girls still following along in the sketching process, I am still sketching loads! I hope you are too. This new book will incorporate some of those newest sketches. Come on~

autumn happiness is...

Autumn happiness is...

I took my cue today from sweet Kelly Rae who always finds a circuitous way back into my life. She is gift to me - and to many of you - on these creative paths we walk. Almost like the leaves that are flying around in big lofty plumes, these reminders of my creative journey are falling down all around me.

I have been feeling overly blessed by the gifts of this season and my heart is simply maxed out!

Creative play + boys

This has been a happily creative year and my lists are still full of things to try.
Do you still have a full list too?

My sons have been helping me with a photography project this fall. I am working on visual collection based on Walt Whitman's preface to the work ~ the Leaves of Grass. I have shared part of it before here. We have a lot of fun out in the open fields, climbing rocks and trees, and trying to keep warm as the cold approaches. One son, Joe, got smart and started charging me a modelling fee.

Seeing the world in a new way.

The change in color, light, and mood in autumn is in such high contrast. My heart is never ready for the green to be gone from the mountains, the leaves to fall in massive waves, and the trees to stand naked. Are the changes hard for you, too?

Bu,t the things I wouldn't have seen before are lit up and alive~

Snuggling sheep.

The sheep are home in the valley. We have been out to play with Kate and Bea and their cousins. Hay is put up, the stalls are cleaned, the dogs are happy, the sheep trailer is parked, and my boots and insulated bibs are hanging up and are ready to go. It is hard to stay focused on the road when the fields are filled with all the beautiful sheep.

Smitten, yes, I am smitten.

Wet paint.

The art classes I have been taking are in full gear. Twelve hours a week of classroom instruction and hours of workshop/homework are seriously hampering my online life. And, I am in love with it all: new tools, ideas, jargon, creative collaborations! I have a hard time sleeping when a new assignment arrives, my mind is just giddy. My art professors are brilliant artists themselves and for a girl like me it is pure play (seriously hard - but fun).

I do realize that along with missing my blogging time, I have been missing my paint. As fun as all these class assignments are, painting is pretty sweet. I spent last night with my new art journal, getting the feel for the pages, color, sketches. I am already in love with it and I haven't even started. Yes.

I know what I am going to do & I am excited to show you!

harvest treats

Most likely a bit too old for this hay bale maze (however, I would have gotten lost I am sure), his sweet head peeks over the straw. We have made it a date to go to the pumpkin farm together, Joshe and I.

Have you stepped into the magical land of God's gorgeous harvest this year?

(Try seeing it from a child's point of view.)

Freezing fingers and pink cheeks we walked between boxes and rows of gorgeous squash, monstrous pumpkins and wild gourds. We had to pick them up, hold them in our arms, and laugh about their shapes and color. We talked about how the farmers grow what they grow. We visited with the dog, ran through the straw bales, and picked out the very best pumpkin pie pumpkins of the year (they are "tricksters" for your information).

In love with this magical place as much as I am, he can't get enough of these pumpkin totems (made with fairytale pumpkins, oh my goodness!). We walked through the gardens and wondered what we would plant next year.

He talks about things he knows I like, "Mom, do you want a picture of this?"

"Mom, would you plant this pumpkin in our yard?"

We plant ideas in our minds for the season of hibernation and spring, always looking ahead.

At home, his art is painted, drawn, taped, and carved. Another (very) messy artist in the house.

We take turns making the messes and then help each other clean them up. I am so lucky he and I share the same creative space, his art inspires and encourages me, all of us, putting silly smiles everyone's face. It helps me to be silly and free in my daily creating as well.

Why not start a project right now in the middle of lunch?

Who's to stop you when his shared enthusiasm is so contagious? And attempted with such abandon?

Thank you sweet son for reminding me of *all of the life* I forget when I live in my too adult world, your adventures are so much fun to share.

i need this

I need this place.

As gritty as it gets - the cold, the heat, the mud, the snow - I need this place.

It is harsh and healing in the same day (how can that be?).

It is playfully restful to my tech-taxed mind.

A wellspring of God's out-poured love on this summered brown world -- awoken now with the birth of autumn.

My eyes and heart are flooded with it all.

I feel it in my bones.

The necessity of living in the open fields. The air, the dusty breeze flipping my hair, hot sun on my cheeks, smells of farm - fresh alfalfa, warm wool, leather boots. The newest red-tail hawks flying just over my head and farm cats lurking just outside the old corral fencing.

It may be the connection I have to my childhood spent on the edge of the farmer's fields. Memories of a youthful exuberance of jumping ditches and running across tilled earth. Or it may just be that this is where God's handiwork is played out and I am lucky enough to have a front row seat?

I can feel its divine pull.

This day was a shearing day.

Joshe (my littlest son) came to help and he was brilliant. He loves the sheep and longs to be a farmer/rancher someday (along with a chef, scientist, and star wars hero). He ran the chute with his *so serious* face, my gloves, and a soft "shhhh" to the sheep. They love him, I can tell.

The ewes were thinned down (in numbers) and then given their trimming. The winter haircut looks like a scissor happy preschooler ~ I laugh every time. The poor girls.

I am home and in my studio the next couple of days.

Paints are out, sketches are planned and emails are lined up and ready to read (promise!). Prayers are shared outloud for your blessed autumn days.

woolly paints

Wool.

In anticipation of sheep shearing this week, I am doing a watercolor of colorful wools.
(it also helped that I was completely inspired by Anna's sweet knitting work ~ she is a great artist and her blog is so filled with Mum love).

Eye candy from the Fiber Fair in Hailey, Idaho

The shearing this week at the farm will be: foreheads and rumps. Neither area does well with loads of wool through the winter -- so a bit of a clean up is good. It will be a fun day. Kate & Bea (my bottle fed lambs) will certainly love the attention and the saltines I will sneak in my pockets.

I think the trick to painting fibers is in the texture.

In watercolors it is easy to add texture through sketching (pencil, pen) and layering paint, lots of paint.

I am learning to sit back and let things dry and then add a slightly different hue on top. Sometimes I get really brave and add a completely new color, too. Try something funky and fun ~ you may really like it.

early morning in Sun Valley, Idaho last weekend

Life seems to make more sense when I spend it outside.

You too?

I moved sheep early this morning. I am much happier when my day starts with them. These crisp fall mornings are my favorite. Changing colors minute by minute, and the sunlight seems crisp and pink. My camera in hand as the sheep moved against the early morning sky, it was perfect.

Take time today with pen & paper, camera, paints (whatever your latest fave), and sit on your porch or in a park ~ not in a car ~ but someplace outside your home/car/work. Feel, see, and live in the realness of right now. Drink it in and let it work it's magic into your heart.

And let's see what you see~

sheep and chutes

Moving and sorting.

There are many ways to move sheep. Loudly. Quickly. With dogs. I have seen it done forcefully and with great gusto - whistles, yells, and man-arms wrestling wool. I have also seen it done in whispers. Quietly the sheep responding to a good shepherd and moving slowly where they need to be.

This was a sheep moving day and we had some of everything.

Once the sheep are marked with chalk (ewe lambs & wethers counted), the sheep are ready to be pushed through the chutes. They go one at a time down the long narrow chute. Many gates are ready for opening and closing depending on the sheep's branding and marking. Strong arms keep the sheep moving, strong hands pull and close gates, dogs sit in shadow waiting for sheep to emerge, and the sweet sheep run as fast as they possibly can.

It is quite lively.

I am proud to be a part of such movers this day ~ the ewes, the lambs, the men, the boys, the loud, the soft, and all the dogs, dusty and dry mouthed and tired. It takes a large sheep loving family (lots of families today) to make this work, everyone needs to do their part.

We are standing in the entrance of autumn -- the season of harvest and the season of letting go. The sheep are my friends and my teachers and I am joy-filled that they are safely home. We will do this beautiful season of change together.

They know I need as much tending as they do~

I am enthralled with the sketches I have visited! I am taking a more careful look today, and I have been blessed so much by your work that I have new ideas all over again! The best kind of *creative* is when you can share abundantly and feel that abundance circle around -- this seems to be one of those blessed adventures. Let's keep at it~

I picked up a new moleskin watercolor book to start keeping my sheep sketches in (I seem to have a fondness for woolly goodness). Until now I have kept my watercolor sketches loose and ready to bind when I am ready, so this is a new thing. It feels more organized.

The only real limitation I feel is the wetness of the page. If your page touches another it will share its colors, but perhaps that will add to the overall feel. I don't know.

I think I like both methods. Which do you prefer?
I think we should talk about books, pages, art-keeping this next week.

Still the pages are very simple. Each little sketch is formed and found on the page before I know in my heart what it truly means to me. This sheep trailer is my first attempt at a favorite interest of mine -- old sheep trailers. I have one I own, and I treasure it. I believe it will teach me many things as I paint it (in my little book) and share it this year.

Safely home.

As October begins, the sheep start trailing home. First one rancher's herd and then another. The mountain trail is a long one and as come down into the valley -- they are tired. We rest them here before we walk them through town.

Look at all of those happy sheep!

I like to walk with the sheep. Men coming off the mountain will be on horses and others ahead will zip up on four-wheelers. I don't mind the walk, I love to talk to the sheep and catch up on their summer holiday.

Poor dogs are so hot and tired they just plop down in the irrigation ditch. I don't blame them~
I thought originally that these were our last years puppies, but they belong to another rancher.

Sweet faces.

Our community has a pen that is used just for livestock gathering, cutting, shearing, loading (and whatever else?), and it is a gathering place for now. We will spend the next three hours as the men chalk the lambs (tagging them) and pushing sheep through chutes. The sheep came down with another group of sheep and they have to be carefully separated one at a time.

It is quite a fun event. All the sheep ranchers in the area are here (and their dogs).

I have more photos of the day, but these are my favorites so far.

Unpacking and catching up with life this week, the weekend was filled with *all sheep/lamb goodness* in Idaho (no Internet) so I am a bit behind on posting. But, I am home and ready to fill in the gaps.

Your sketches are sublime. I have been amazed at the beautiful things in my email. Your artistic fingers and hearts are alive with color and feeling. I can't wait to see what you will do this week!

Coming home.

It is *sheep trailing* time across the mountain west. Our sheep came in this week and the sheep in Idaho are coming in this week, too. I am off to see & attend a wonderful sheep fair/retreat with the women in my family.

I hope your weekend is filled with *autumn yum* as well~

In the barnyard and in the field, beauty is found in the simplest things~

As light moves across the valleys and the sheep migrate from the mountains to the fields and into the blessed barnyards, there is a seasonal rhythm you can see and hear. An unspoken liturgy of hooves and bells making a holy procession of white and wool. As a visual artist I dream of capturing these seasonal movements, I see them in my mind and hear them in my sleep.

With an honest desire to capture what is real, an authentic feel of this life and place, I have been met with the inevitable broken and messy too. It has been a photographic journey into the holy moments of hope and divine grief.

sickness and sadness

broken bones and broken fences

Perhaps this is why the sheep are such a part of God's Word and such a needed place in my life. They are the real lived out. Not in a pretend or plastic world, but a simple world of dirt and sweat, blood and tears. A soul rendering melody of life and death. A blessed place of messy, hungry, neediness before God's face.

It is a divine rhythm of thousands of heartbeats that stirs in my soul--one I hope that will stir in yours.

the divine rhythm

I waited until it's opening to share, I had too, I was nervous about it all coming together~

Now that it is here and everything is ready, I am thrilled (butterflies, but thrilled). I am presenting two dozen favorites from my "blessed barnyard" collection -- intimate images from my years of loving the lambs. Many of the photos I chose to use were things I hadn't printed before, so the exhibit is new to me as well. Yes!

Not only that...but the sheep arrive in the valley this afternoon. I have gotten up early and gotten ready for the big day. It is going to be a great adventure. I am praying for safe travels this morning as they embark on their mountain retreat, I will meet them for the tromp through town after lunch.

And just so you know, I am not letting up on my art journaling this week, I am packing my little sketchbook along with me ~ I hope you will, too. Adventures await those who are packed and ready!

Harold and the Purple Crayon (Crockett Johnson)

One evening, after thinking it over for sometime,

Harold decide to go for a walk.

He made a long straight path so he wouldn't get lost.

And he set off on his walk, taking his yellow paintbrush with him.

He cut across fields, watching the flowers, weeds, and dragonflies light up as he approached.

Reaching the trees the leaves brightened into buttery yellows,

and led his path straight to an azure lake.

He walked along the shoreline, softly brushing the water and creating a soft glow.

He loved painting his world with happy color and imagined his paintbrush

mending the broken places he found...

...and bringing happiness to others.

Surely more adventures await this little boy and his golden brush.

Delicious words.

I believe in the power of words. I am addicted to good words and often carry my thesaurus around in my purse in case a word needs some crafting (not kidding, I am a word nerd).

In photography the words are implied~ shared in shape, lighting, and mood. It is a challenge and gift to be able to relate a message clearly in visual form.

In art journaling it is so simple. You can understand the feel of a page by the colors used, the images shared, and the words used. They are playfully mixed and can be layered in a way to share more than one thought, too. How fun ~ layers of words!

Statements, thoughts, words, and lyrics that are playing in my head and heart tend to make it into my pages, it is like a scrapbook of my inner conversations. I like to blend some things into the page and at other times let the words make the larger statement with the art as a support. I don't plan it like this. This isn't a "figuring out" process, it is organically how it happens.

Are you led to share your words in journal form on the side of your work or on top of your work?

Take a moment and let your page work on your heart ~ let it show you where to add your prose.

I always write in soft penciled lines before printing on top of my art. It helps to write out the journaling, too. Just use a soft artist eraser (white erasers) to pull off the pencil lines (don't rub off your paint). Don't journal on wet paint either...let it dry.

Add in your thoughts ~ your little words ~ what is speaking to your heart. It doesn't have to make sense to anyone else but you. It is your art journal! Let it be you~

Words that are teaching me, convicting me, encouraging me find their way into my pages as well.
What the art is leading me to remember are the words I choose to share -- I am open & honest in my art.

"every little drop matters"

If you are nervous about using your handwriting, you shouldn't be, it is you. Take time to write out what you want to say and practice your penmanship ~ I do. I think it helps to have some text on hand as well -- print off some of your favorite quotes, words, meanings, verses and have them on hand for inspiration.

At times one well-placed word looks and feels more right than a whole page of journaling.

Today, find your inner voice and let it show up on your sketch~ you can do this!

The artist's tools

Everything we touch/hold and use to create becomes a immediate tool. An extension of our fingers the pencils, pens and brushes are our hands, our heads, our hearts. The simple pencil for a time is a sacred object, helping us create what it is we inwardly see. We each can look at the same object and make many different works of art --we each bring our own hearts into our art, don't we?

If you have sketched much this past week you know it can be a bit frustrating at times to get the message across to the paper. "This is what I see mr. pencil...why can't you make it look that way?" Do you wonder:

Why do I sketch so small?
Why do my lines always go to the left?
How come my shape turned out looking like something else?
Why do I always choose to paint things purple?
I have sketched it three times, why can't I do it right?

We aren't here in this space to do perfect drawings. We are not perfect people who do perfect things (I am not). Our sketches are more than just drawings to get right, they are the inner workings of our hearts -- literally.

What is going on in side of you will manifest on paper. It has to, it is created out of you.

Do you see how this is true? Can you look at your sketch with an honest heart and feel the good intentions your bitty drawing is sharing with you? Perhaps it is a restful sketch or a reminder to you to find rest. Perhaps it is a drawing of a pathway leading you into something new. Or it may be something very colorful and alive or subdued and serious. There are no wrong answers here, this isn't an art class, this is art journaling and it is very different.

It is you and your inspired art ~ at play.

Each day's art may be completely different in design and feel, that is okay. Your message in your art may only make sense to you, that is okay. Your art may not even make sense to you, and that is okay too. It is all a playful process of learning to trust yourself, being gentle with yourself, and letting your artist play freely.

If you sketch a bit wonky, join the club! I am a wonky sketcher and my paintings tend to run off the pages. It's okay, embrace your creative wonkiness in this space -- you are safe here.

Learning to sketch and add color and words is divine art.
It is letting the spirit sing in a new way in our lives. That is so exciting!

Another little sketch for my art journal with the simple steps.

(These few posts are in response to the lovely Q's and comments I have received about art journaling. We are doing a shared exercise and would love for you to join us.)

The sketch, taking out the lines that I didn't need and adding a bit of the vine in pencil.

Washing in the browns and yellows. It's good to work loosely (not controlled and tight) and to use more water than less. This one works though, the dry brushing on the ends looks like wood grain.

Adding in the Virginia creeper vine was simple.

It is just three colors of green and a small brush. With a crisscross motion (like little x's) I just skipped around the spaces adding depth and highlights as I looked at the vine -- this time leaving a bit more white. Now to do the detail in pen~

These gorgeous vines are changing quickly to red right now so it would be fun to do another in a week or so.

Adding color to a sketch on paper can be addictive. (an artist's fair warning)

I rather like the idea that with pencil and paint you can create layers to real life, a "... giving the mundane its beautiful due!" (Updike) Adding a soft line of gold highlights and drawing tiny frills on boring edges, the possibilities are endless.

It is your heart's leading. What do you want to say.

Many times I will sketch, paint, and draw without knowing the answers first. That is okay too.

I took my simple watering can and copied it (one for watercolor, one for acrylics)

Did you like sketching?

Did you have to remind yourself that there is no messing up in this kind of art?

We are free to create our own art in this place.

One of the simplest ways to add color in watercoloring is to wash it on ~ wet on wet.

(I am not endorsing any watercolor paints. I have 5 different sets I am trying, each is unique in the color choices and usability - wet/dry, small for travel. This piece is done with a set of tube watercolors. Feel free to use what you have at hand!)

These are examples of wetting the outside of my watering can with water on my small flat brush (just water) and then adding paint to the wet paper. It all blends and flows together, the greens, browns, and golden colors. Just make sure that you have your paints ready before you start.

If you let it dry completely, you can add layers on top. I added the watering can last doing the same thing -- wet the paper first and then adding color. The long streaks of brown and the little leaves were just an added layer, too. If you look at my painting, you can see the brushstrokes added in, can't you?

When I get to this stage I always berate myself for not leaving enough unpainted space. The "whites" in watercolor are what bring light and life into your work, try to leave some untouched whites inside your work. I would have left a small strip around the top of the handle and the pail.

But overall, I think this one will be adorable in the next stage. I always tell myself how cute it is even if it isn't, it helps me stay motivated to stick with it. Remember the ugly duckling story?

Now, not to confuse you, but I really loved the idea of this watering can in paper piecing and acrylic paints as well. In my art journaling I embrace all kinds of painting and tend to pull them all in.

Do you have a favorite paint medium or do you jump from one to another, too?

I added a layer of light molding paste to this...I will let it dry and see what I want to do

Now back to adding details on our original:

My favorite part of this experience is adding in the detail and seeing the little piece come alive. Have confidence in your sketching (give yourself a bitty pep talk) and then jump in. Use a thinner pen ~ a micron o1 is the best if you are a bit unsure, you can paint over those tiny lines easily.

Go around your basic shapes with a good sketching, add your hatching marks back in. Add some life with personal nuances you use in your handwriting ~ add a couple tiny words? A few xxxooo's? Little numbers? A short verse or prayer?

Keep in mind, we are using defined shapes and our hope is for journaling on top of our art, so we need to leave an area for writing. White space, open area, is a good thing! Or you may write right on top of your painting, too.

Remember ~ no rules.

There are thousands of books written on the subject of sketching and drawing. I have a small bookshelf full of them. There are three different teachers at our local College teaching drawing classes this semester. It is a beautiful art and a strong foundation for all other arts...and I love it. Don't you?

I am an artist, not one skilled in detailed drawing like that but I can sketch. And so can you.

I know I have limited my creative life by believing the lie that I had to have specific instruction from "learned teachers" to understand and be able create "real art". That simply isn't true. Sketching is defined as "drawing that lacks detail, an image, verb, or to draw in a rough manner." Well...anyone can do that!

In art journaling, you are absolutely free to try and express your own art ~ It is all yours.

You get to create with no rules. Sketch with rough abandon! Now how does that sound?

So lets talk tools.

I have sketching pencils and I rarely use them. I use a #2 pencil for all of my sketching -- it can do all that I need. You can certainly invest in pencils and try them if you wish. Or do like me and just borrow a few from an 8 year old. They have some great sketching ideas, too.

With our pencil, let's take this sketch & see our next step.

You will want to lift off excess pencil lines (erase lightly) that are in areas to highlight. Look at where the light hits the object and let it be lighter. Then using less pressure with my pencil, I go back in and add some shadowing and hatching with my pencil.

I may cover it all with dark paint later, but it helps remind me of where I want to add more color or detail.

Brushes.

Watercolor brushes are different than other brushes. They tend to be finer, have a pointier tip, and allow for better control. I added a flat brush to the mix here because I love it and use it all the time, too.

A watercolorist I met encouraged me to invest in a couple of good brushes. It really made a difference, the brush tips have held together really well.

Pens.

These are the mainstays of my collection. My black pens. I typically use the micron o1 pens for my watercolor pages and the sharpie mixed pens for the acrylic/mixed medium pages. I think many pens are necessary, sometimes your favorite pen has a really bad day (have you had that problem too?)

Paper.

I am using Arches watercolor paper - Hot pressed, 140lbs. I really like it. It isn't a book, so I have to tear out pages and reassemble later, but for me it is pure freedom. If I don't like a sketch, it gets flipped over and I can do something else on the other side.

I have a couple of moleskin watercolor books and my 2012 sketch book project book, too. Each is a little different, but all of them have a smooth surface. You may want to purchase some paper to try, just to see what your preference is.

Lets put color to paper on Friday. Sound good?

Are you getting sketchy?

I will tell you honestly, I am not a perfect artist.

I am a messy, sketchy, silly and divinely led ~ imperfect artist. It fits my personality. It is great for getting started in wildly imaginative projects and it is perfect for art journaling.

Want to join me?

I think the basic things to think about with this kind of art, may be the things we tend to overlook the most. I think we all agree that getting focused on product is fun and insightful, it is one of my favorite past times, but it is secondary to the sketch.

The real work & fulfilling joy in art journaling is what your heart wants to share with you -- right now.

You can sketch and paint anything you want (or that you have been assigned to sketch) and become a better artist but the meaning behind the work you do won't be the same. I believe art journaling is to help us each individually learn, stretch, see, hear, understand and be in awe of our beautiful lives and give our daily work deep meaning.

It is a gift to have awareness, aliveness, divine leading in your art~ One you can have!

Let's focus on sketching today~

There is a sense of hyper-focus to sketching. It is an inward asking and outwardly expressing exercise. A beautiful thing to develop that will help you in all aspects of your art (I promise). You simply ask yourself, (your divine-inner-self), "What do you want me to see today?"

Perhaps your inspiration comes from simple words or meanings that are following you lately. It might be a song you can't get out of your head, a photo you just snapped, an object you saw on a walk, a place, a person (or kitty) that has your immediate focus. It may be an image you see in your head (and heart).

What is it right now? What is it that is speaking to you right at this moment?

Is it a horse's nose (remember I am rural!) | the garden hose | neighbor's chickens | a branch and nest | the latte and newspaper in front of you | your purse slumped on the chair | little toes | pot on the stove | books on the shelf | his baseball cap | the soccer ball | a watering can?

For me, today, it was so simple. I asked and I immediately thought of this -- my old and trusty watering can.

Always remember, simple is best.

I typically use a #2 mechanical pencil and paper (I will share pencils and types of paper with you next time). I focus on the simple shapes, the most basic forms and lines. Sometimes I squint to see what is most important to see. At times I will change the focal point or the entire composition if it doesn't feel "right" to my inner self.

As much as I want an honest representation, art journaling is about sharing what is deeply felt about your inspired sketch. I can make my drawing as big or small, as thin or wide, as dark or as light as I want, it is my lovely sketch. Yours will be different than mine.

If I want a *real* representation I will just use my camera!

I could use any of these perspectives or change the context entirely by putting the can in the garden or next to some potted plants.

Having the object itself is the easiest way for me to sketch. I can see light falling on certain areas, colors are more vibrant, and sometimes I get a clue as to why I am sketching it? (And sometimes I don't!)

This is what I ended up with. A simple line drawing of a watering can, some sun on my back, and interesting thoughts about what this object says to me today. Sweet.

Do you want to talk about art journaling? Oh, I do.

Last night I dreamed of my favorite tubes of paint, big dobs of color heaped on the page, and it made me so happy. Blissfully looking at lumps of unused paint~ like gooey eye candy, yummy yum.

I have to admit, I am an art-creating-collector. I purchase loads of supplies that I know I will need. Do you do the same thing? One of each? I have a closet full of goodies. Does having a lot of things make it easier for me to engage in the art I so desperately long to create? Does it help you?

With a treasure trove of inspiration at my fingertips, does that make it easier for me to sit and create my own heartfelt piece?

If I had more time, if my children were older, if I didn't have to make dinner tonight...Do you get where I am going with this? :)

I have had comments lately on how blessed I am to live where I live~
(I am still laughing)

It is a gift to see the beauty in your own life some days, isn't it?

I think this place is quaint and quiet, a homey little pioneer town in the mountains. But it is definitely not as beautiful as other places I have lived.

I have lived in the heart of the Midwest (Northern Indianapolis) where the haze lays over the fields and the fireflies bounce around in the dark evenings. I have lived in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where *quaint* originated -- the beauty out my doors was breathtaking -- lavender wisteria blooms falling from pine trees, honeysuckle growing wild across the back fence and the humidity softening hard edges.

I have also lived in the east valley of Phoenix, Arizona, in cotton fields and wild desert. I fell in love the starkness of sand and twigs, and the expansive open spaces. Warm reds and oranges against the purple of the Superstition Mountains ~ gorgeous.

I have lived in visual splendor.

And now, I am in a tiny farm community with dust, rust, and sheep...

Every move has been a hardship and a great learning experience. I don't regret a single home. Each stepping stone on this path has been an great upturning of fallow ground, seeds planted and watered, and harvests of understanding grace, real friendship, and divine truths. Do you know these blessed gifts in your life, too?

Some lessons are only learned when our hearts are fully ripe to hear...

Now, as the seasons are changing and the sheep are getting ready to come home (remember they have been up in those high mountains camping), I am again grateful for the chance I have to live in this sweet (sheepy) place.

It is great teacher, a visual liturgy, and a messy canvas for my head and heart~

It is also a perfect fit for a silly girl like me. I am home.

I am having *a bit of busy* this week ~

I want to share some of the images that have blessed me this past week. The life of a lens lover is never dull (frightening & blissful would be better adjectives), and this week has been both of those.

Color, feel, composition, style...it is all a blended mix today~

The sweet babe that has blessed my life all year with her impish personality and coveted smile. We did a late summer photo shoot at my little stone house, she is such a treasure~

And a sweet story to be told of a last minute wedding that changed my photographer's heart (forever) ~ I am so grateful for these two hopelessly-in-love people that blessed my life this weekend. xo

I really dig into a study that is topical. "Stones" are one of those kinds of things my head likes to swirl and spin. This time however I am letting my heart do the speaking ~ a language that is sometimes hard to hear. (shhh...)

I wanted to share a couple more ideas for getting out and learning something new this season.

Art loves art.

When I am in a place creatively where I am afraid/unable/blocked, I do something rather extreme -- I go see what others are creating (and usually get involved). I am still the artist that I am, it just gives me a new layer to explore, and I think it pushes out the boundaries that I didn't know I had.

So my journey this fall took me into the local college's art department (An amazing resource!) I wanted to try a class that was *out of the box* for me, something I could do when my boys were at school and something that I hadn't done before. I chose a 3-Dimensional art class ~

I am immersed in lines, color, and form. The materials are all new to me~ electrical wiring, aluminum conduit, and finding unique ways to connect pvc pipe to create a lamp for my photo studio. The teacher is a brilliant sculptor, so the class is very informative (and silly, too). I am loving it already. Use your local Universities for inspirational classes!

Pinterest. <the link) If you aren't already addicted to this pinning idea, you should be. It is a great way to excite the sleeping artist and get you motivated about hundreds of new ideas. I am in love with it. Make sure to find me and let's be friends? I would love what your eyes see, too.

Sketching. <the link) I am loving this simple, tiny, easy to try book by Alwyn Crawshaw. It is a really little book and it doesn't go into everything, but it has perfect vignettes to try and watercolor helps, too. I am keeping it close.

After my *Holy* post I had a lot of emails/comments about the book I was reading. I love to share good gifts and this definitely is one of them.

The Artist's Rule. <the link) This sweet book is full of creative good. Christine is a brilliant writer and the material is perfectly suited for my journey right now. You know those kinds of reads?

If you are a Christian that hasn't been exposed to much of the Monastic life of Monks/Nuns, this book may be a reach for you. But, If you understand the love language of lectio divina, the prayerful depths of contemplative living, and love the inner workings of a monastic life ~ you would love this book.

I really don't know how better to state it.

For a bit of background, my reading is deeply entwined with experiences of the divine from many places and people, I love to read. I love the deep spiritual depths of St. Teresa of Avilia and the life-in-God-lessons of Brother Lawrence. At the same time, I am also a great devote of Shane Clariborne's writings on The Irresistible Revolution: Living as an Ordinary Radical, Beth Moore's bible studies, and all of the wonderful books by Julia Cameron (combining a creative life + the Creator). I think reading other's encounters with God opens up all kinds of brilliant connections in your own life~

I am sure for some this is a wild mix of authors. It's okay, I am a wild adventurer ~

Just remember that *art loves art* and your creative life can be enriched and fed through engaging in new things. Don't ever be afraid to try~

Divine moments~

I seem to be lost in them this week. I am not sure how they happen, but happen they do, and I am in quiet expectancy of more. I see them right now as *holy touchpoints* : little treasured gifts from God to keep my heart open and my head up.

Do you feel this at times too?

Part of my narrowing of choices for this fall season (last post) has to do with being brave, trusting, and spending time with others. I wrote it several times in several places. They each call to be included in this fall mix.

Can I tell you something brilliant?

It is happening. Every one of those sweet words is making her presence known.

I am joining a group of lovely ladies for a semester workshop on the unique pilgrimage between the contemplative life (the life of a nun/monk) and a seeking artist. Sound sweet? (Joan...I have the book for you! xo)

I am so thrilled, nervous, excited, and captivated by it -- at the same time.

If you feel strongly in your life's journey that you need a strong spiritual grounding, you can have one. It is here beneath your feet, above your head, in your hands, in your eyes...holy is here. It is right here with you and me right now. God is with us and God is for us~

I am a spiritual person, and for me God's goodness and mercy are life altering every day ~ a new adventure awaits!

And of course, as I promised you...the sweet lambs in their green goodness.

I am celebrating this weekend.

We have survived the first two weeks of school: Yes.

Perhaps for others it may seem a bit trivial, but when you are faced with multiple boys,schools and schedules it is quite a crazy feat!

I am also wanting to share with you my latest artistic adventures and invite you to adventure, too.

Hello sweet artists ~ welcome to a new season!

There is so much variety to what your head/heart/hands can do. I wrote recently about being overwhelmed by all of the creative choices, it is easy to get overwhelmed with good things on the internet. There are amazing teachers, video clips, styles, mediums, groups, and for some of us artsy-girls we get excited by many (or all!). Am I speaking to anyone?

I think for me it was the narrowing down exercise that helped the most.

In the quietness of an afternoon I took my pen and paper and began a sketch.

It started as a word bubble pattern ~ you know the divergent/convergent drill. Adding different thoughts as they showed up in my heart/mind. I wrote them as simply as they came and I let them progress outwardly. It became a tree in the end, and the messages were clear:

The things I wrote down needed to be my focal points.

Then I prayer-fully waited.

Within a day things started to appear in my life.

I will share a couple of these big & small project ideas with you every day this week.

The first sweet thing I wanted to share is this simple sketchbook project.

I don't know if you have heard of it, but for creative girls with any smattering of interest in sharing art with the world ~ this is brilliant. You sketch a tiny booklet based on a theme of your choosing (or randomly chosen) and then you mail it back to the collection. You add your art to artists all over the world.

The hardest part for me was the idea that my little creation would fly away and I wouldn't see it again. You can have it digitally copied, you can visit it, or you can simply create...and let it go.

I felt I needed help in creating and letting go. That simple prayer was answered.

I wanted to work with new mediums.

Then I fell in love with black canvases. I am addicted to the way it excites the other colors and makes simple shapes bounce. I am working on several ideas and hope to have some to show you soon.

I needed a push in my photography.

Photography is a serious art and I wanted a strong teacher (forcing me to do the hard things) and I wanted a community of like-minded students to help me walk the difficult path. Little did I know it was just down the road.

I have thrown myself into a new photography class at our local college. It is exactly what I thought it would be: stretching. It is full of young minds, (I am the oldest student) and it is a wild challenge. I am being pushed way out of my comfort zone already ~ oh my, yes. My teacher is brilliant and motivating, I adore her already.

When signing up, the registrar looked at me and said, "Wow, you are brave."

Yes, yes I am.

I will be back tomorrow with another new idea. Come and see~ I hope you will join me in making some new pathways in the journey this new season!

As I said, every sketch is introspective~

Penciling in the details of my workspace, I see the colorful lines that give my creative life structure. My writing desk, my baskets of "fluff", my stack of books, stamps and spools, frames and friends.

All the things that bring my heart to the art~

I also sense the mirroring this sketch has for me -- helping me to see myself in new light and with a new lens. I need to clean a few things out of my creative life? I need to see myself in other artistic ways?

My real workspace is not this neat & sweet...it is a workspace (lol)!

I am also finding that as I approach my art in a more central way (meaning: watercolors love to express themselves best in the middle of the kitchen), I have little boy eyes that see and want to do the same things.

Paint is a attractive and addictive playmate.

In my son's describing the beast he created -- he wanted to make sure I noticed the a wild and colorful heart he had inside. Love that.

In response to the questions of the pen I am using, it is just a simple .o1 micron. I have also been learning the differences in brushes (I am a newbie). I have tried several and noticed that I gravitate to the brushes that have a bit of an edge. I am learning the nuances of the watercolor brushes - they are so delicate/sweet compared to the monster brushes I use for mixed medium art.

As always, with any new art, there are many new things to try & many mistakes to make. The learning curve is always steep the first couple of weeks.

I also see that my head takes longer to catch up to what my heart longs to express.

The morning light is a tease~

Through a camera lens, if you look bit to the left or to the right, the value of light changes. Temperatures of the light will move up and down and the *lit-up moment* that you just encountered a minute ago will change instantly to flat and uninteresting.

It is a brilliant thing to capture the morning light. Chasing the sun's early pinks and softest blues, and watching the streaks of gold run across the open fields. It's like seeing a hint of heaven~

I love catching a bit of that *divine shimmer* that God leaves on the world as he makes all things new again~

"Oh Lord, let my soul rise up to meet you

as the day rises to meet the sun."

I tried to sketch this changing light one morning~

I sat with our kitty. She was sitting on a step outside watching the other morning teases ~ a cool breeze & the singing birds. We sat in silence as her breathing became still and the light across her back changed from brilliant white gold to orangey-brown and into mud grey.

I haven't begun to figure out how to draw a cat. I limit myself to simple shapes ~ a bit third grade, but it is okay, I am a beginner (no expectations - remember?)

I am more confident with a small sketch book after working in an art journal. It is a perfect size. It only takes a few moments to sketch what the squinting morning eye sees.

Quick pencil scratches, a few pen marks, brushes of soggy wet color and it is done.
