"Body of work"
Sounds like a phrase too simple to get caught up in, but having my heart & mind -- Oh, I did get wrapped up in it.
What does it mean as an artist to have a "body of work"? Why is it important, even necessary to collect those silly sketches, painted canvases, photographs, lyrics/poems written on bits of paper, and all kinds of beautiful bits of personal ephemera? What do we choose to keep certain things? How do we keep it?
As an athlete, wouldn't your context of "body of work" be totally different? (I think watching all of these amazing Olympic bodies is infusing/confusing my art journaling). I know "body of work" to my inner athlete means--let's run!
How would you sketch or photograph a literal "body of work" as an artist?
Loads of pencils and paintbrushes in her hair?
Or sketch a strong body and layer her with canvases, photos and art journal pages?
Perhaps I may infuse as many ideas as I can~
My body of work as an artist.
A healthy body: strong, able, fit and ready.
And a body (a vessel) meant for God's goodness ~ wrapped in His love.
What would that look like?
Should we think more about our body (bodies) of work this summer?
Do you have multiple pieces of art that you want to protect or keep a copy of?
Would you like to understand yourself better as an artist (the main reason I maintain a body of work)?
Share your ideas and I will too~
***p.s. I am sharing my summer art journaling videos this weekend! Yes!***

Dear J, I just uploaded a video of my summer art journals. http://ginaleekim.blogspot.com/
ReplyDeleteDoing a series of artwork as a visual diary, has not only solidified who I am as an artist (aka beauty-seeker), but has brought me to a new level of self-understanding, peace and trust. Thanks for continuing on your journey. For it inspires me so.
XO,

You have given me something to think about here, Junelle. I've been thinking of compiling a photo book and a slideshow of my "body of work" . . . something like a portfolio. Also thinking of doing a vision board/business plan in those formats as well . . .
ReplyDeleteI love seeing what you are creating. It always nourishes my soul. I'm glad you are back posting, although I am proud of you for taking a break! I missed you!
I love it too! I do! I do! There is an artist that does greeting cards with a similar look and whenever I see them I buy one with hopes of one day trying something like it. You've re-inspired me! I've kept everything for as long as I can remember. I even have sketches from kindergarten and that was a longgggg time ago, lol.
ReplyDeleteHi Junelle... great "food" for thought... sketching/mixed media artistry is very new to me (gotta love being introduced to Wild Art of Abandonment) - this opened a new door for me. I'm always playing & designing with my fabrics but now I've started mixing all my passions of patchwork, scrapping and mixed media together and forming new ideas and creations. I think sometimes our bodies of work are always evolving and changing yet still show who we are inside.... I love being inspired and inspiring others also.
ReplyDeleteps: when I first saw your gorgeous pic at the top... the first thought was a lady handing on monkey bars... swinging to and fro... being absolutely care free.... (or maybe a very creative athlete competing in Gymnastics... hehe).... but turn the picture upright and she's another reinvention... the beauty of imagination!!!
pps: my son is a state squad swimmer with hopes of one day representing his country at a national/international level... I'm going to ask him what his "Body Of Work" is and see what his answer is... being 14 he'll probably be thinking what's his Mum going on about... LOL....
take care - gorgeous lady... have a fabulous day
hugs
Darlene
Love this idea. Have a wonderful weekend.
ReplyDeleteLove. This.
ReplyDeleteJunelle, what I love most of all about this post is the way you continue to challenge yourself and everyone else who comes inside your sphere. You have such a wonderful artistic and creative way of thinking that is so expansive and crazy in the right kind of way - I LOVE IT!! Whatever that is out there wanting to be translated via creative hands and minds will surely want to come and play via that kind of seeking mind - it's quite delicious! When you say body of work it reminds me of having tossed almost my entire body of creative work (25 years in the making!) when we moved to Greece and I wanted to carry as little as possible. I know it's a challenge as an artist to dare throw out ones creations it being an even bigger incentive to make new art, but oh boy have I wondered many times; what on earth was I thinking throwing it all out!!! Anyhow... it does create and big void that needs to be filled again and right now it continues to be colored by the antics of my furry friends :0)
ReplyDeleteHugs, and waiting in sweet anticipation for your next post!!
I love you your art and messages are always so inspirational! And mostly they keep me close to God!
ReplyDeleteHow lovely this canvas is, reminds me so much of YOU!! I just love the way you think and try new things. I've done so much with my art this year and even over this summer. I'm into a new little passion with fabric at the moment and it's so fun!! This was good to read and think about, thanks for always doing that with your posts!!!
ReplyDeleteTake care and enjoy your day! HUGS!!
