a *simple* list

Studio day.

Abuzz with the excitement of March, I have been finishing all kinds of new sketches.  My old scratched desk is piled with stacks of notes, colorful ephemera, and my favorite books.  To me it is delicious mix for a snowy day.

I have been going over the workshop videos, notes, supplies, and all the hopes and dreams I can fit in a three week class.  I love it...I do...I do...

I am inspired right now by the beauty of the white canvas the snowfall is making.  It feels like the whole valley is a gorgeous sketch on bright white and the little bits of color peeping out from under the snow are beautiful watercolors.

Just seems so perfectly timed~

I have compiled *the simple list* of things you need for this upcoming class.

Christy Tomlinson is posting a longer version of the supply list - the first week of class - for anything else you may want/need.  Her shop is full of delights and she typically gives discount coupons during the class for purchasing supplies, too.

You will need:

* mechanical pencils
* sketching notebook (this is not an art journal - just a sketch book)
* an art journal (a heavier-weight art journal or one you make from a bound book and gesso, I will show you how)
* watercolor paper/acrylic paper - a few pages of each.
* white gesso
* matte decoupage
* paint brushes (a package of different kinds)
* a couple of nicer watercolor paint brushes (a medium round, a small flat brush, and a rigger)
* a basic set of acrylic paints - primary and favorite colors
* a basic set of watercolor paints
     and/or
* neocolor ll wax pastels - mix of primary colors, secondary colors & flesh color (do not use neocolor l -      they will not work)
* pens ~ micron (o3/o5) or sharpie fine-point black pens, a scarlet lime pen - it writes on any bumpy  surface, white fine-point sharpie pens

I will be posting some book ideas and handwriting tips this week, too~

Questions?  Leave them in the comments and I will post as much information as I can.

This class is going to be different than others you may have taken.  First, I am so goofy ~ I will not be intimidating to anyone promise.  My heart's work is to make art accessible to you.  I will also gladly push those who are comfortable in their own art to expand their boundaries...Try something wild and new~

The multiple projects each week are all in video form - easy to use and simple to go back to.  I will help you every step of the way!  I love beginners and super-skilled artists equally, both are welcome and will find ample content.

This *wild abandon* approach to art is so hope-filled and encouraging, I know you will love it.  Plus you will get to visit my studios and play with the sheep, too.

Between my prayers for this little workshop and the beauty of the snowy sheep, I am simply floating this week~

In His great grace & peace,
jj

  6. All that we see is an opportunity to put on canvas or in print and you do it so well. Love the picture of the cracked chair seat, looks like its cracking under the weight of the snow. Prayers for a successful class.
    Stay warm.

  12. Hi there! I LOVE your blog and I LOVE seeing your art journals but this class intimidates me so much because of the amount of drawing, a.k.a. sketching involved. I have absolutely no desire to draw or sketch things....I just want to learn new techinques and play with my supplies. Based on the description of the class, it sounds like there is a lot of drawing. :-(

  19. I have been working on an art supply list.(Im out of a few colors of paint and PAPER!) Husband said I needed to restock- insert smile here. I added a sketchbook. I havent been able to find a white sharpie anywhere local & didnt see them on Christy's site.( I see them on Amazon) I havent signed up for the class but I have many of the supplies and its very reasonably priced so I might add it to my list! The photographs today are beautiful & inspiring as usual.(love seeing your face!!) I sure do wish we were neighbors- not sure if this Fl girl would know what to do with the snow tho'!!!

    1. Try Dick Blick too for sharpies and other art supplies. I find them to be the most reasonable. Michael's and Joann's also have the Sharpies if you can use a coupon.

    2. Found the white extra fine point sharpies on Dickblick.com item #22100-1022. It took me awhile to find it so I thought Id share. About half the price on Amazon.

  20. I too am glad you have posted a supply list. I was getting a little worried. I know Christy has been busy, but I signed up right away and I haven't heard anything. It takes us beginners time to gather up our supplies. I'm just really excited for the class. I hope I'll be able to keep up with you all...

    Looking forward to getting started,

  21. I am supper excited to start this class with you and Christy. I was wondering if you could recommend a brand of watercolor brushes. There are so many to choose from and I am fairly new to watercolors and have just been having a hard time making a choice. Thank you so much, can’t wait to start class with you. ~Blessings~

  32. I just signed up for your class, it sounds like so much fun. I haven't done much drawing so hopefully I can manage this. Can't wait to hear about your sheep too. We used to raise them on the farm when I was growing up but so far I haven't convinced my husband to let me have some. LOL
